Back round tasks, resource usage, bots that might've slipped into the download... Start -> Run -> Type MSCONFIG and hit enter -> Startup Tab. Uncheck anything there -> Services tab. Click Hide All Windows Services. Uncheck anything last. Apply. That'll take care of backround tasks
As for bots, download Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware Personal SE and Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1 and get crackin'.

No, normally most IM programs run quite a bit in the background, and can slow down stuff. This can also happen if things are updating, or talking to one another. I would recommend MS Antispyware Beta highly, its an amazingly stable program and one of the best out there.

<3 MS Beta. I didn't know about it until a month ago, and it completely saved my hard drive. Run that with SPSD and Ad-Aware and you'll NEVER have a problem.

Nope, they are all free, you can buy a certain version of Ad Aware, but I wouldnt. MS Antispyware Beta is free off of the microsoft website (www.microsoft.com its on the front page) And Spybot S&D is free also, just google it.

pro bono = for free. ANd I have done this myself, to my own computer. As long as you download from the actual site that provides the aforementioned programs, you should be fine. Do you have a virus scan engine on your computer, such as mcafee or norton?

Thats your problem, you need one, if nothing else use the windows firewall. I personally would recommend Mcafee, as I have had no trouble with it.

Yea, ms antispy is safe
As for your background processes, do what echosex said and go to www.processlibrary.com and type in some of the processes listed there in your startup menu. It usually gives you a fairly good idea of what background processes you need and dont need.

Firefox is awesome. I only use it. Windows firewall is built into SP2, and you need a virus scan engine, espically if your on high speed internet.

Most firewalls You have to pay for, but there are some free ones. You can buy them at computer stores, or you can buy them and download them online. I think AVG is a free one, but I dont know where to get that. Also, you can get routers with firewalls.
Technically though, a firewall might also slow your comp down even more. Its still highly recomended though, as hackers are always trying to virus-up your computer

That doesnt always work if you've already caught something. I would say Mcafee Personal Firewall.
